How to Select Busway Rated Current
Engineering Guide for Busbar Trunking Systems
Selecting the correct busway rated current is essential for safe operation, reliable performance and cost-effective electrical distribution. The selected rating should not simply match the transformer size or the largest available catalogue value. It should be based on the actual electrical design and operating conditions of the project.
The first step is to review the connected load and determine the realistic design demand. In many projects, not all loads operate at full capacity at the same time, so engineers should consider demand factor, diversity and simultaneous operating conditions. A reasonable future load allowance should also be included without unnecessary oversizing.
Busway selection should also consider system voltage and frequency, installation environment, short-circuit level, route length and voltage drop. For long feeder routes or high-rise rising mains, voltage-drop calculations may affect the final current rating. Rated current and short-circuit withstand capacity must always be checked separately.
A practical selection process is:
Review SLD → Confirm Load → Apply Demand/Diversity → Add Future Allowance → Check Voltage & Frequency → Verify Short-Circuit Level → Calculate Voltage Drop → Select Busway Rating
Before final selection, customers should provide the SLD, calculated load, voltage, frequency, short-circuit level, route length, installation environment and project specification.
